Many patients commonly attribute their eye discomfort, and symptoms such as redness, irritation, burning, foreign body sensation, itching, watering to dry eyes or allergies. We now know that the majority of these patients are actually suffering from a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD.
MGD occurs when there is compromise to the structure and/or function of the meibomian glands in the eyelids that produce the protective oily layer of the tear film. This oil prevents the watery part of the tears from evaporating when your eyes are open and helps to protect the ocular surface from disease. Without these oils our eyes become more susceptible to the the negative effects that dry climates, air conditioning, smartphone use, computer use, extended reading and other daily activities can have on the long-term health of our eyes.
At Horizon Eye Care Group we are one of only a handful of practices nationwide that utilizes a multifaceted approach to dry eye and MGD treatment. From artificial tear drops, oral supplements and antibiotics, to LipiFlow® treatments and tear osmolarity evaluations. Please click here for more information on dry eyes and MGD.
We are also now offering one of the newest modalities in dry eye diagnosis and management, Tear Osmolarity testing. For more information on this procedure call our offices to schedule an appointment, or visit www.tearlab.com.
